Speedy Ortiz

Speedy Ortiz (Northampton, Mass.)
Indie Rock/Noise Pop

Sadie Dupuis started Speedy Ortiz in the summer of 2011 when she recorded her one-woman-band record The Death of Speedy Ortiz, which ironically became the birth of Speedy. After recruiting three more members, the band last year released the critically beloved Major Arcana record. Songs like “Tiger Tank” juxtapose muddy guitars against Dupuis’ non sequitur lyrics and Tracy Bonham-esque vocals. Other fun facts: The band recorded a song called “Taylor Swift” and its website is a LiveJournal blog. This winter, Speedy Ortiz released the four-song Real Hair EP, satiating fans until its global tour ends and the members can get back into the studio and record more ferocious songs.

YDIIYD: Waxahatchee, Cloud Nothings, The Breeders, Veruca Salt and basically every good grungy band from the ’90s. (GP)
