Coves (Leamington Spa, U.K.)
Psych/Surf Rock/Shoegaze

Where the fuck is Leamington Spa? Well, it’s located in the West Midlands part of England, and a river named Leam runs through town. Lawn tennis was supposedly invented there, and so was the musical duo Coves. Since forming the band a few years ago, John Ridgard and Beck Wood have released two EPs and this month’s debut full-length, Soft Friday (not to be confused with Pink Friday). Each of their songs sounds different: “Cast a Shadow” is redolent of Psychedelia, but at the end of their track “Beatings,” a distorted guitar segues into a harmonica — when has that happened in any song? Remember Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game”? Coves take Isaak’s maudlin melodies and replace them with ethereal, wooly guitars, equating blissful noise.
