Arum Rae

Arum Rae (Brooklyn, N.Y.)
Blues/Singer Songwriter

Many of the Brooklyn-via-Austin, Texas, chanteuse’s songs have a way of pulling the listener in, entrancing them and then spitting them out like chewed up food, leaving them suddenly transformed. “Why do I keep drinking, wasting my time on you?” she questions on the song “If I Didn’t Know Better,” co-written by former The Civil Wars member and Grammy-winner John Paul White. On the track, her voice smolders as she delivers the lyrics methodically, with only minimal guitar chords being plucked in the background. For someone who’s been touring out of her car for the past decade — opening for the likes Sixto Rodriguez (Searching for Sugar Man) — her wistful blend of bluesy fare on this year’s five-song The Warranted Queen EP finds her garnering much overdue attention.
